Another year and another big turnout for the annual Rotary Club of Senlac St Leonards Classic Car Show. Engines purred and chrome gleamed as hundreds of classic vehicles rolled into Rye on Father’s Day, 21 June. Held at Rye Rugby Club, the popular event always promises a colourful mix of vintage motoring, craft stalls, family entertainment and community spirit, while raising funds for local charities and good causes and it kept its promises.

At 11am, the Mayor of Rye, Councillor Chris Hoggart opened the show and Town Crier Paul Goring gave his welcoming and fulsome cry. Later in the day a Battle of Britain Spitfire made a fly past.

More than just a car show, the event reflected the Rotary spirit of community service and friendship. As members are keen to point out, Rotary is not simply a club, it is an endless opportunity to get involved, make a difference and support local communities.

Speaking with some of the car owners, who were both locals and from further afield, it was clear they all agreed that the event was a great one to attend and they were very happy to be there.

Dave Miles, the Rotary Club’s car show organiser said, “Phew, what a day. I’m absolutely delighted by how the day has gone; despite the heat which may have kept some people away the show was a great success. The proceeds will be shared between Rye Heritage Centre, Surviving Christmas, Senlac St Leonards own Yellowmen, other Rotary charities and local good causes. I’d like to thank our sponsor, The Mermaid Inn, as well as all our other advertisers and Rye Rugby Club for allowing us to hold our show at their ground.”
