This March, a farm in Brede will be offering a one-of-a-kind opportunity to experience one of the oldest occupations in the world. Hare Farm Hideaways has set up a series of one day lambing courses to give people a a hands-on taste into what goes on in the lambing shed. The three courses are open to adults, no matter how inexperienced, to learn all aspects of lambing, and there is also the opportunity to live like a shepherd and stay overnight in a shepherd’s hut.
Lambing courses were introduced at Hare Farm last year, with students coming from as near as Rye and Icklesham, and as far as Dorset and Cambridge. The 1,000 ewe flock provided much to see and learn from. Most participants had no experience with lambing, and were so thankful to be allowed to enjoy the spectacle unfold before them. We also welcomed some novice sheep-keepers who were keen to gain first-hand experience before their own ewes lambed.
All aspects of pre and post-natal care are covered on the courses, including spotting signs of labour, births, fostering, new-born care, feeding and husbandry tasks. Every course also includes lunch or tea in the local pub, The Red Lion, Brede.

Each course can take a maximum of eight people, and costs £90 per person. Prices include a meal at the Red Lion, Brede. Also available is accommodation in the shepherd’s hut which starts at £100 for one night.
