It is with great sadness that Michelle, Stephen and Kay announce the death of Derrick (long’un) Baldock.

He was a well-known and well-loved Rye character and he and his late wife Lena ran several hostelries in Rye, including the Hope Anchor, The Globe and also the Castle in Winchelsea.

He was also a Rye footballer and cricketer.

There will be a service of Thanksgiving to celebrate his life in the Baptist Church, Rye at 3pm on Tuesday, September 12. All welcome

  1. Let me be the first to pay my sorrow to Derek’s family I played golf with Derek ( long un) great sport man cricketer and footballer and a kind and loving man rest in peace Derek.

  2. Derek was a regular in the Queens head on the nights when the Ukele band played , enjoying the music and people chatting around and with him, always ready with a smile.

  3. So very sorry to hear that Derrick (long’un has left us. I have great memories of long,un and his sister Kay living at the top of New Road / Kings Avenue and haveing great times in the Queens. Another real Ryer gone. RIP Derrick

  4. One of the first people I met in Rye when he was host at the Hope Anchor. Always full of chat and Rye stories and a good welcome. Many a friendly argument about football and all sports. He will be missed in the town

  5. My Grandad used to take me to the Salts in the 1960s to watch a formidable Rye United side in the Sussex County League. Derek / Long’un wore number 6 (I think) and was a superb left half / central defender. In the late 1960s early 70s I was a keen scorer for Rye Cricket Club; during that era Derek was captain of the Sunday 11; a very fine left hand bat and occasional slow left arm bowler. In my early playing days, Derek was always ready with sage words of encouragement and advice. In more recent years i would enjoy frequent sporting ‘banters’ with Derek at the Hope.
RIP Derek. A true local sporting legend.

  6. Derek is my first cousin once removed. I only just found out the sad news. Absolutely lovely chap. Used to love calling in at The Hope Anchor when in Rye for a chat in the bar. It’s really good to see such nice words being written about him.
