Obituary: Miss Iris Leeds-George

Iris Leeds-George was a pupil at Rye Grammar School for seven years and in that time was not only house captain but captain of the hockey team. She was at school during the period of the second world war and was evacuated to Bedford with the school.

After the war she returned to East Sussex as an assistant teacher at Playden school from September 1949 until December 1950. Iris was then a teacher at Brookland CE Primary School for twenty years from 1951-1970.

She then moved on and joined the staff of Freda Gardham County Primary School teaching slow learners and was appointed mistress in charge of the infant section of Freda Gardham School in 1972.

Iris retired from teaching in 1979 after a long and rewarding 35 year career in education and passed away recently.

Her funeral is to be held at St Mary’s Parish Church, East Guldeford at 11am on Wednesday, December 20 then onto Brookland Village Hall afterwards.
