The local marine corps has been busy lately and the skills being taught to youngsters are important for their futures, their self-confidence and to help them appreciate the value of teamwork. To have such expert guidance and tuition is a real incentive to belong to the Corps and it is looking both for more youngsters aged 9+ from Rye to join up and see for themselves and for adult volunteers too. Training is on Tuesday and Thursday evenings between 6:30pm and 8.30pm at Rye College Training Centre in Love Lane.

During the Easter holidays there was an amazing cadets’ fieldcraft day at Brede Woods including several who have recently joined up in Rye.

The day was packed with the typical fieldcraft lessons – how to choose the campsite, how to build a basha (shelter), how to cook in the field, camouflage and concealment, and movement in the field.

Executive Officer Lt Colonel (MTC) Vitalija Grundaite explained: “During the day we let our cadet NCOs teach the lessons and be responsible for their sections to enhance their own teaching and leadership skills.

“The day included a tug-of-war competition and a race to see who could build a basha fastest. To end we set up an obstacle course which was not only to teach the importance of communication and teamwork but most importantly to give our cadets what they like the most – getting wet and dirty.”

The Rye cadet group is very welcoming and if you are interested, do turn up for a taster session and meet the team.

  1. I’m all for kids getting out there in the fresh air and doing activities such as these but I’m not sure I see the point in children carrying cut out wooden guns?
I can see the entire organisation is run as a military outfit but does anyone know if they are affiliated to any military Corps or Regiment?
