If you have felt bereft of being able to sing in the past two years due to Covid, now is your chance to make amends. The mayor, Councillor Rebekah Gilbert, is holding her last charitable fundraising event on Saturday, April 9 with a scratch Messiah at St Mary’s Church. Everyone is welcome to come along and sing, or listen to the evening’s performance.

There will be a quick run through from 3pm-6pm with doors opening at 6:30pm for a 7pm performance. Please bring your own copy of the music. There are professional soloists, of which Rebekah is one. The conductor is the wonderful Anne Whiteman, the organist is the venerable Richard Eldridge and the trumpeter is Evan Gill.

There is no need to book in advance but it does help to know how many to expect, so please contact Rebekah on cllr.rebekah.gilbert@ryetowncouncil.gov.uk.

There are donations on the door for singers and audience in aid of Rebekah’s charities – free music lessons on the Rye Wurlitzer and grants for young people starting businesses via the Rye Old Scholars Association.

Rebekah said “Given the Covid situation, it has been difficult to raise money for charities over my term of office, but I am grateful to everyone who has helped over the nine months I have been able to organise things. Most recently we had a gala black-tie dinner on Saturday, March 26 at the Mermaid, which raised over £4,500, and this will be my last endeavour before handing over the mantle in May. Both are in aid of helping young people with learning, life skills and opportunities.”
