Archaeological Finds Day at museum

Have you found any archaeological objects over 300 years old and would like them identified or recorded? If so, then the Kent and Sussex Finds Liaison Officers will be at Rye Castle Museum next Wednesday 13 May for their next Finds Day.

They work for the Portable Antiquities Scheme, a national scheme run by the British Museum and National Museum of Wales which encourages the recording of archaeological objects found by the public on their National Database, (https://finds.org.uk/). They also process the Treasure cases for their counties including the recent Late Bronze Age axehead hoard recently acquired by the museum.

The Finds Day at Rye Castle Museum is their first joint county event, and Andrew Richardson (Kent) and Jane Clark (Sussex) are really looking forward to seeing what exciting discoveries the public and local metal detectorists will bring in for them to identify and potentially record with the scheme.

Wednesday 13 May from 10:30am until 4pm at Rye Castle Museum, 3 East Street, just off the High Street.

  1. Great to hear the hoard of sixteen Icklesham Bronze axeheads have been acquired by the Rye museum. Perhaps it might be appropriate if some of them were lent on long term loan to the Winchelsea museum so at least some of them could be on display in the Parish in which they were discovered.

  2. I agree with Philip. It would be great to be able to display some of these Bronze Age axeheads in Winchelsea Museum along with other local finds. This would be particularly appropriate given the increased interest in pre medieval life in Winchelsea, Icklesham and the Brede valley.

  3. Perhaps Philip Merricks ,
could write about all recent activity all around his land as there have been many groups of people using Metal Detectors recently and one event with what looked like Ground Radar Type equipment .
We look forward to getting a talk about the Axe heads in the future as well .
