The Rye Art Gallery in the High Street is once again to have an artist working in its heritage studio spaces. The new scheme will visibly demonstrate working artistic practice in the gallery which is an important mission of the charitable RAG Trust. It is aimed at encouraging customers’ interaction and inspiring both local and national artists.

Hello, I am a sheep by Will Taylor

The first Artist in Residence is Will Taylor, an artist and print maker based in Rye who will be trialling the scheme until December 2019. Visitors will be able to discuss his art or any pictures in the exhibition. The gallery welcomes feedback, both from artists and the public, on original ideas for the scheme, which hopefully will inspire and engage people in the gallery and in art itself. The work space is compact but there is an opportunity to also work in studio 6 at the top of the building where an easel is installed.

Will Taylor was elected member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 2018 and is a member of the Society of Graphic Fine Art and Rye Society of Artists. He says: “I am very excited to start this new scheme and giving this opportunity to artists of different genres. Anyone can register an interest or apply for a period of three to six months.

“The hope is that there is a mutual respect between gallery and artist and the latter is happy to be in agreement with the overall aim of the gallery, to make it the best it can be and understanding that the gallery is offering the artist a possibility to share and show their work.”
