Earlier this month, members of the Monica Edwards Appreciation Society visited Rye Harbour and Winchelsea. Monica Edwards was a popular children’s writer in the 1950’s and 60’s and set one series of her books in Rye Harbour, where her father had been the vicar. They were joined unexpectedly by some Monica Edwards fans from New Zealand who were staying at the Old Vicarage, which is now a bed and breakfast. They enjoyed a trip along Rye Bay on an RIB (rigid inflatable boat), courtesy of Full Throttle Boat Charter.
The boat trip was followed by a splendid tea provided by the present owners of the vicarage. But before that, there was an opportunity to hear a recording of Monica discussing the characters in her books and people from her days at Rye Harbour. On Sunday morning the group explored Winchelsea, where some of the action in the books takes place. It was a lovely opportunity to explore the area described in the books and meet other fans of Monica’s writing. Thanks go to Joyce Bailey and Sue Winn for arranging it.
