On the final day of the En Plein Air competition exhibition at Rye Art Gallery on Sunday September 28, there was an award ceremony for the four winners and for six artists given special mentions.

The prizes were presented by Sarah Kowitz as a sponsor of the competition and a trustee of the Rye Art Gallery.

The four winners were announced several weeks ago, as reported in Rye News. The first prize went to Georgina Allen who won £1000 donated by the Kowitz Family Foundation. Natasha Cooke won the second prize of £500 and Tobit Roche won a third prize of £250 donated by Heringtons Solicitors and an added fourth prize to Rosie Woods.

The six artists given special mention by the judges were:

Ruben Beales’ Walk to Godinton was the youngest participant in the exhibition and the gallery used this as an opportunity to launch a young person’s En Plein Air competition next year for 2026, working with colleges.

Richard Swann’s Summer Trees and Natalie Bird’s Breezy Snowdonian Morning were highly regarded by the judges and got many votes for their lovely composition and muted colour palette.

Chris Daynes was also the best seller in the exhibition and has only just started to be represented in the gallery.

Hannah Sindall’s abstract, Fire Field, Isle of Oxney, really caught the interest of the judges for the colour choice and sense of place they evoked.

En Plein Air will be back next year – 2026 same time, same place.
