The classical music programme at this year’s Rye Arts Festival features two young pianists and a mature master of the pianola.
Cordelia Williams should have performed at the 2022 Festival but the sudden and sad death of the Queen meant her concert was cancelled. But the Festival is delighted as Cordelia is coming back this year with a concert that features Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms and, after the interval, Schumann’s Fantasie. A wonderful evening on Saturday, September 16 is promised.
And on Monday, September 17 the young Lithuanian pianist Gabriele Sutuke will also be playing at St Mary’s Rye. Gabriele won the Audience Prize at the Birmingham International Piano Competition, and her career is hugely promising, so this is a chance to catch a star of the future!
And on Sunday, September 24 Mike Boyd brings a pianola concert back to Rye Arts Festival after a gap in which Gabriele was born!
Mike’s concert comes in two halves. In the first, musical interpretations are played on the pianola. Music from Stravinsky to Fats Waller is played, but Mike, the pianolist, controls the tempo, dynamics and phrasing.
After the interval we are treated to the reproducing piano, where the perforated rolls automatically play an actual performance from the past from the likes of Rachmaninov!
