Heavy lifting in the church

There are many people involved in putting on Rye Arts Festival who are never in the limelight but play a vital role in bringing about one of the South East’s biggest multi-arts festivals.

Taking the skilled piano movers at Morfeys, who turned up at St Mary’s Church in Rye, just after dawn broke to put the heavyweight Bluthner grand piano onto the stage that had been assembled the night before.

Morfeys men moving the piano at Rye Arts Festival

Four men took the legs off the piano, which weighs the same as a family car, carefully wrapped it, and then lifted it onto the stage, where they got out jacks to lift it before reassembling the piano. All in an early morning’s work.

A couple of days later and the piano needed to be moved across the stage to create a space for a violinist, but the blocks under the stage to support the three piano legs also needed moving. So church warden Roy Abel, dressed in blue overalls, volunteered to crawl, like a coal miner of yesteryear, underneath the stage to do the job.

All in a day’s work to ensure the show would go on!

The Festival says thank you to all these unsung heroes!
