AudioActive have been running music workshops at the Rye Creative Centre since its inception in 2009.

Their current project is “The Lab”, a space for young people to write and perform music together. Workshops are led by local artists: DJ Matt “Rockwell” who works in Rye’s Grammar School Records and UK Hip Hop pioneer DJ Skitz.

The Lab is supported by The National Foundation for Youth Music and aims to connect young people in rural East Sussex with the wider music scene.

The workshops are open to young people aged 13-25 who want to learn about writing urban music including DJ skills, music tech, rapping and beat making. There are also opportunities to collaborate with established guest artists and perform at large events across London and the South East.

The Lab has grown into a tight-knit community of young artists, who recently completed their debut album “The Lab-oratory”, receiving glowing reviews from respected music publications, and featuring established Hip Hop artists such as Jam Baxter, Genesis Elijah and Skitz.

Wednesday sessions feature beatmaking  and DJ and turntablism, and Thursdays feature music production and lyric writing – from 6:30pm to 8:30pm both nights.

Following this success, the Lab crew are keen to introduce a new wave of young artists to their ranks, to see what the next generation of young musicians in East Sussex have to offer.
