Movies and events at Rye Kino from Friday December 18 include:

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2D) & (3D) [12A] 135 mins  The eagerly anticipated continuation of the epic saga created by George Lucas. Thirty years after defeating the Galactic Empire, Han Solo and his allies face a new threat from the evil Kylo Ren and his army of Stormtroopers. Directed by JJ Abrams and starring the original cast of Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher with Domhnall Gleeson, Adam Driver, Andy Serkis and Lupita Nyong’o.

Carol [15] 119 mins  Set in 1950s New York, a young woman working in a department store falls for an older woman trapped in a loveless but convenient marriage. What follows is a beautiful love story with complicated consequences. Based on the novella by Patricia Highsmith, this highly-acclaimed film stars Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara with Sarah Paulson and Kyle Chandler.

Pan (2D) [PG] 111 mins   Peter is a mischievous 12-year-old boy who is spirited away from his orphanage to a fantastical world of pirates, warriors and fairies called Neverland. There he finds amazing adventures, meets new friends Tiger Lily and James Hook and fights life-or-death battles with the ruthless pirate Blackbeard to save Neverland and discover his true destiny – to become the hero who will forever be known as Peter Pan. A magical family film starring Hugh Jackman, Garrett Hedlund, Rooney Mara, Levi Miller, Amanda Seyfried, Cara Delevingne and Kathy Burke.

Sunset Song [15] 133 mins  Based on the classic novel by Lewis Grassic Gibbon and brought to life by master director Terence Davies, Sunset Song is an intimate epic of hope, tragedy and love at the dawning of the Great War. Set in the rural community of Kinraddie, Sunset Song is driven by the young heroine Chris and her intense passion for life, for the unsettled Ewan and for the unforgiving land. Starring Agyness Deyn, Peter Mullan and Kevin Guthrie.

Bridge of Spies [12A] 141 mins  A dramatic thriller set against the backdrop of a series of historic events. This is the story of James Donovan, a Brooklyn lawyer who finds himself thrust into the centre of the Cold War when the CIA sends him on the near-impossible task to negotiate the release of a captured American U-2 pilot. This is a story inspired by true events that captures the essence of a man who risked everything and vividly brings his personal journey to life directed by Steven Spielberg, written by Matt Charman and Ethan and Joel Coen and starring Tom Hanks, Mark Rylance, Scott Shepherd, Sebastian Koch, Alan Alda and Amy Ryan.

The Lady in the Van [12A] 104 mins. This magical film tells the true story of the relationship between Alan Bennett and the singular Miss Shepherd, a woman of uncertain origins who “temporarily” parked her van in Bennett’s London driveway and proceeded to live there for 15 years. Starring Maggie Smith, Dominic Cooper, James Corden, Jim Broadbent, Frances de la Tour, Roger Allam, Alex Jennings and Gwen Taylor.

Spectre [12A] 150 mins.  007’s back!  A cryptic message from Bond’s past sends him on a trail to uncover a sinister organisation. While M battles political forces to keep the secret service alive, Bond peels back the layers of deceit to reveal the terrible truth behind Spectre. Starring Daniel Craig, Christoph Waltz, Léa Seydoux, Ben Whishaw, Naomie Harris, David Bautista, Monica Bellucci and Ralph Fiennes as M.

The Winter’s Tale [12A]  ENCORE: Thursday January 7 at 7:15pm  The first season of the Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company Live promises an exceptional series of plays broadcast to cinemas from London’s Garrick Theatre over the course of a year. Shakespeare’s timeless tragicomedy of obsession and redemption is reimagined in a new production co-directed by Rob Ashford and Kenneth Branagh, following their triumphant staging of Macbeth in Manchester and Manhattan. Starring Judy Dench as Paulina, Tom Bateman, Jessie Buckley, Hadley Fraser, Miranda Raison and Kenneth Branagh as Leontes.

Rhapsody / The two Pigeons  LIVE: Tuesday January 26 at 7:15pm  This delightful Frederick Ashton double bill opens with his setting of Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, using the music’s dark turbulence and brilliance to inspire some of his most thrilling choreography. The second half of the programme features Ashton’s delicate, deceptively comic The Two Pigeons – a work rarely performed and a real treat for ballet fans everywhere. Starring Natalia Osipova, Steven McRae, Lauren Cuthbertson, Vadim Muntagirov, Laura Morera and Ryoichi Hirano.
