Serenaded by the wind

Players from Hastings Philharmonic Orchestra make a welcome return visit to Winchelsea Church on Saturday May 18. Conducted by Marcio da Silva, they will perform Mozart’s Serenade No.10 K.361 and Dvořák’s Serenade for Wind Instruments Op.44.

Mozart’s Serenade was made famous by the inclusion of the second movement in Peter Shaffer’s film and play Amadeus in which the character of Salieri said: “This was a music I’d never heard… It seemed to me that I was hearing the voice of God.” The piece is scored for 12 wind instruments and double bass, a unique combination for the era in which it was written.

In May 2024 it will be 120 years since Dvořák‘s death and his wind serenade features many references to the Slavonic style of his homeland. He was inspired to write his own work having heard Mozart’s serenade in Vienna.

The concert starts at 7.30pm and tickets cost £22 and are available online at www.winchelsea-arts.org.uk.

This will be the final concert in Winchelsea Arts current season. The next, the ninth season, was launched at the end of April and sees the return of past favourites, welcoming also some stars with an international reputation, like pianist Pascal Rogé, and the London Handel Players.

The London Handel Players’ concert, which opens the season in July, has been made possible by the generous sponsorship of Heringtons Solicitors. A Christmas concert by Candlelight is becoming a tradition, and this year it has a French theme. Season tickets are available, offering six concerts for the price of fewer than four, and all the details are on the website.
