Joseph Boulogne -The African Mozart
Joseph Boulogne was born in Guadeloupe on the 25th December 1745. He was the son of a plantation owner and his mother was a Senegalese-slave. Joseph gained fame in France and was a French violinist, conductor, composer and soldier. Moreover, he demonstrated excellence as a fencer, an athlete and an accomplished dancer. His historical significance lies partly in his distinctive background as a biracial free man of colour.
