THIS EVENT IS NO LONGER TAKING PLACE AT RYE CREATIVE CENTRE AND HAS NOW BEEN MOVED TO ST LEONARDS. Based on mythology, La Callisto combines two contrasting love stories involving the same Olympian goddess, Diana, which do not seem to have been associated in any previous source. The first concerns the love between Giove (disguised as Diana) and the nymph Calisto; and that between Diana and the shepherd Endimione. The second refers to the love between Diana and Pan. The combination of the two myths presents opposite forms of love between characters of different ranks, features the tension between love and duty, and introduces confusion of identity. Alongside this Faustini developed comic supporting roles, with accompanying witty subplots. Unfortunately, as is ever the case, whilst the myths were adapted to 17th-century Venetian conventions, some raw 21st-century nerves will be set on edge. Whilst the gender fluidity is very on point, Mercurio’s scathing dismissal of ‘fickle women’, and his glib justification for the ‘no’ means ‘yes’ rationale for what amounts to rape, more than jars. But those were different times, and this was baroque entertainment not a code of morality, so try to keep calm!
