3D cedar tree

The cedar tree in Rye Cemetery that was felled in 2023 has been recreated in a new 3D computer model.

The tree, thought to be hundreds of years old, was controversially chopped down after fungal decay was found causing structural damage and leading to safety fears. It was a much-loved part of the cemetery and there were plans originally to create a sculpture using its wood.

Rye resident Amber Holmes created the new video using software from Hastings-based ScanWow.

“I scanned the tree by accident when visiting Rye Cemetery,” said Amber. “It shows the importance of digitally preserving things, as future generations can now know all about the cedar tree.”

You can see the whole video here.

  1. It could have been entered in the Tree best in Britain,
Such a shame to loose an iconic tree we have lived with all our lives and now there is nothing. A new tree in its place would at least be something .

  2. Back in September 2023, we all voted to plant a Yew Tree in place of the Cedar. When the time is right the new tree will be planted (I’ve been told fairly soon) and will need looking after. Although we probably need a bit less water right now, the Yew will need volunteers to water and care for it, I wonder if a local organisation or group would volunteer to take this on?
