Rye Harbour Nature Reserve says there have been reports of Blue-green Algae in Castle Water.
A spokesperson for the Reserve said, “While this is a natural occurrence in the sea and inland bodies of water like rivers, ponds and lakes, when the algae develop rapidly, blooms can form which can be harmful to people and animals. If a person comes into contact with blue-green algae they may experience skin rashes and illnesses if swallowed. It can also be harmful, and in some cases fatal, to smaller animals, including dogs, wild animals and livestock.”
The advice for the general public is to:
- Avoid coming into contact with the water. If for any reason you do, use hand sanitiser or rinse your hands with clean water as soon as possible.
- Keep your dog on a lead – do not let it swim in, or drink, the water. In the unfortunate event of this happening, please seek immediate veterinary care.
