The Gallivant in Camber Sands is hosting monthly community beach cleans, drawing locals and visitors alike to help keep the shoreline pristine. The free events provide all equipment, and volunteers are welcomed back afterwards with coffee, tea and cakes.
The initiative is attracting people from far and wide. A family from Bern, Switzerland, discovered the clean-up while attending a yoga class at the Gallivant. Sophie, one of the Swiss visitors, admitted she was curious to try something new. “It was very satisfying to fill up your bag,” she said afterwards, praising how well the event was organised.

Terry, from Bromley in London, came across the clean-up while planning a three-day walking trip via Hastings. “It seemed a good thing to do,” he said, adding that he would happily return.
For Debbie and Adam, regular participants who take time off work to join in, the appeal lies in combining environmental action with a moment of calm. They describe the beach clean as “a beautiful beach walk with a purpose” and “a mindful activity.”

The monthly events offer a chance to enjoy fresh sea air, support the environment, connect with others and finish with well-deserved treats at the Gallivant.
The next beach clean takes place on Tuesday, October 14. For details and registration, visit the Gallivant’s website.
