Over a hundred thousand litres of water a year will be saved thanks to the new urinals installed in the men’s toilets at Rye Harbour. Work to upgrade the toilets, which also includes new windows, have just been completed according to Icklesham Parish Council (IPC).
A spokesperson for the council said the new waterless urinals are a big improvement. “So much water was being wasted as the old system would flush every 15 minutes using
huge amount of water. It is estimated that each new waterless urinal will save around
100,000 litres of water per year, however we suspect that we will actually be saving more
than this as the old urinal was using a lot of water due to its age and the size of the cistern.”
This change will mean reducing the strain on water sources and help maintain the quality of supply. “The conservation can also contribute to climate mitigation by reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Less water usage also means less energy is needed for treatment and distribution, leading to a smaller carbon footprint.”
Any savings will be passed on to tax payers says the council. IPC received £1,000 towards the cost from Rother District Council’s Reduce, Reuse and Recycle scheme.
As well as the upgraded toilets, the old timber frames on two windows have been replaced with new pvc frames.
The council is encouraging residents to come up with other proposals that need funding in the parish. If you have any project ideas that you would like the council to consider, please get in touch.
