We all have special memories, things that we hug tight in our hearts and things that make us smile. Kate Thomas has many such memories but one special moment changed the course of her life and she has one close friend called Sally who is responsible.
A good place to start is always the beginning. Kate had two children at Winchelsea School and at the age of five her young son was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy at a very early stage. She and Sheila Caister formed an alliance and supported each other through this harrowing time. We all want our children to be well and their aim was to raise as much money so that there could be more research into how to help these youngsters.
After many years, Kate went solo and decided to bring up the two children, Daniel and Lucy, on her own. It was a daunting task but with her band of special friends she made a wonderful job of it. A few years passed and they were suggesting that Kate went on a dating site. She was not sure but with a quick nod from Kate, Sally swiped over, “interested” for one particular man.

The first date was at the Kino. The two sat outside having a morning coffee and just spent the hours chatting. He was definitely a ‘keeper’, all her friends said when they met Pete. He even stayed in her house to care for Daniel so that Kate could have a break in the sun with her friends.
A proposal was made and accepted and then the decision had to be made as to where to have the reception. Kate went to see Matt, the manager of the Kino and a plan was hatched.

Matt explains: “It was an absolute delight to host Kate and Pete’s wedding reception at the Kino in Rye. Kate approached me a year ago as they were struggling to find a suitable venue that could cope with Daniel in his wheelchair and this place has a special place in their lives, as it was, of course, their first date. We have level access so Daniel could reach all areas with ease. The couple wanted a reception outside followed by a film because they often came to cinema together. The weather wasn’t kind but fortunately guests were able to be both inside and out. Kate’s friends had produced a short video which was Sheila’s tribute to the couple and everyone was delighted and surprised when it appeared on the screen in front of them. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house.

“We have catered for small intimate parties, eightieth birthday parties, larger celebrations of life in the Silver Room, and even a marriage proposal on screen recently. Children’s parties are really popular, too. We want to be a big part of the community. We offer a ‘Party with a Difference’.”
Kate’s and Pete’s party went with a swing: the food was wonderful, the Prosecco flowed and then the guests watched The Greatest Showman – it was perfect.

Rye News and Kino Rye wish Kate and Pete every happiness.
