Rye’s skate park on the Salts has reopened after repairs paid for by the town council. The park was originally built 20 years ago and has been closed to users for much of the summer.

Jack Scriven grew up using the skate park and gave this positive review on Facebook on Monday, September 16 following lengthy online discussion about the repairs in July and August. “I have seen the past post about Rye Skate Park and the concerns about changes and the impact it could make on the BMX community in Rye. I have been riding in Rye from the day it was built on a BMX skateboard and scooter. BMX being my main hobby for ten years.

“I thought change to the park would be good and could bring more people down and also give anyone with any riding ability a chance to learn something new. I wanted to highlight the cost and time Rye Town Council have put into the park. The park has only just opened with its new ramps and resurfacing and is already being used by people of all ages, skill levels with BMX and scooter enjoying it.

“I have just been talking to some of the riders who are down the park today (they are at a higher skill level then some of the riders who use the park regularly) they have said that the new resurfacing is a much higher quality then the old wood and that the new layout gives them opportunities to try new stuff. The old ramps will be missed but change is good.”

Flipflop Jess commented on social media: “My three kids spent most of the day there yesterday on their bikes and scooters. They said it was packed! There were really little ones to old ones and all different abilities. They had a great time. Surface is really great and loving the longer one in the middle.”

The mayor of Rye, Cllr Andy Stuart, added his comments: “I am delighted that the refurbished skatepark has re-opened and it is already attracting large numbers of users! I would also like to thank the town clerk, Richard Farhall, and the town steward, Nicky Ledger, who worked tirelessly over many months on this project to make it happen. It’s not always been an easy ride, but we got there.”

Richard Farhall of the town council is delighted that so many of the town’s younger residents are enjoying the partly refurbished facility. “We will be asking Fearless Ramps to suggest some further improvements and then consult on them in the near future.”
