The HerStory of Rye project is a living oral history archive of women working in Rye. Local volunteers record interviews using their mobile phones. We are always keen to find both interviewers and interviewees so please comment below if you are interested in taking part and click on the web link to learn more about this unique project.

Maka Sukhishvili was born in Tbilisi, Georgia. Having grown up in Georgia, she came to London in 2007 as a supervisor in a hotel in Sloane Square. The pace of her London life was intense and by chance, after a weekend in Rye with a friend, she fell in love with its atmosphere and beauty.

In 2014, Maka learned about a job opportunity to become a companion to an elderly Rye resident, Dorothy Watson. She loved looking after Dorothy until she died in 2022. Maka has been caring for elderly people in Rye ever since. Over the past 11 years, she has been engaged in a wide range of jobs in local hospitals, pharmacies and general practice, either as a volunteer (during Covid) or an employee.

Maka’s HerStory interview offers us all valuable insights into the working practices, both within and outside of the NHS, to support vulnerable elderly people and end-of-life care in our community.

  1. A lovely picture of a lovely person. an interesting snap shot of Maka’s life and her contribution to the town of Rye. The longer recording that can be listen to is worth listening to.
Thank you for the interview. I met Maka when she came to Rye to take care of Dorothy and the first time I met her could tell she is rare human being of kindness, thoughtfulness, trustworthy with emotional intelligence. Rye has been blessed with her coming to work and make her home.
    A friend.

  2. Maka is a most beautiful, deeply kind and thoughtful person and Rye is so lucky that she chose to live and work here. She has touched many people’s hearts in this town and profoundly enhanced the quality of the lives of those she looked after with her loving care.
