Terry and Georgina are recovering from their ordeal of having to sleep in their car in Winchelsea on a cold night in October, as reported in Rye News. Visiting them in their home yesterday, one could see that the experience had taken its toll but they were just getting on with life and doing things that they enjoy.

Terry is a talented artist and Georgina a skilful and innovative potter. They are the loveliest of people and wanted to say publicly a huge thank you to all the people who have reached out and supported them over the last few weeks. They have had cards wishing Georgina a speedy recovery and locals popping by to see if they need anything.

Paul Ramsay, publican at The New Inn in Winchelsea has been supporting them too: it was he who flagged up the story in the first place.

He said, “I was so sorry to learn of their ordeal as they are such nice people. Sadly, we were away, otherwise we would have offered them a bed for the night. The roadworks have been a nightmare to us as a business. Trade dropped off dramatically and the worst thing was that our staff had long, tiring journeys to get home, taking forty-five minutes instead of ten. It is good to see Georgina is regaining her strength and we are just thankful that she is ok.”

Terry and Georgina wanted to thank Rye News readers for the supportive comments that they wrote having read the article.

Rother District Cllr. Simon McGurk wrote, “When I read KT’s article all I could think of was how could anyone treat anyone, let alone two of our older residents, at night in this way. Probably like me, many people reading about Terry and Georgina were thinking, what if this were their own family? I apologise to Terry and Georgina for not seeking their permission but I felt I had to write to National Highways and try and make sure this didn’t happen again.” Cllr Simon McGurk is awaiting a reply.
