People talk about meeting inspirational women but no-one had prepared me for just how inspirational Pam Peters really is.

Pam Peters an inspiration

Talking to her you would imagine she is in her seventies: you would never believe that she is 92. Her eyes twinkle with a hint of mischief and fun and her love of all things Rye is palpable.

Pam is part of the Rye St Mary’s knitting group which meets at the church on Monday mornings. This group of avid knitters creates items which are sold to raise funds for charity. Pam started knitting as a youngster and has a passion for it. Her latest creation is the adorable Paddington Bear and she has made 106 so far with others being ordered. She has raised thousands of pounds and intends to carry on creating them while there is a demand. I cannot imagine that the demand will lessen as they are so popular and have been bought and taken all around the world.

Places that the bears have been sent around the world

They are sold at Savia Gifts in Lion Street and Vanessa, the owner, commented: “It is a real pleasure to sell Pam’s special Paddington Bears. I love finding out from the buyer where they are heading off to once they leave the shop. The last one I sold was going to Hawaii.”

For 69 happy years Pam was married to Ron, a Peasmarsh policeman. In his honour she has knitted a Pirate Penguin, because he was in the local pantomime, (Oh no he wasn’t!), playing a policeman penguin, cricketer and soldier. These figures are so creative and have the Pam wicked sense of humour knitted throughout them.

Rather shyly Pam told me that she was part of Slimming World and had been presented with a certificate which states that as “Woman of the Year 2025” she was given this honour because she is so inspirational and helps others when their slimming week has not gone to plan. Her warmth and generosity of spirit shine out and you cannot help but feel uplifted in her company.

Inspirational? Yes, indeed.

Work in progress

  1. I offered to take photograph for a tourist in Rye as she was trying to take herself with a knitted Paddington bear .. she was so pleased. I said I knew the person who made them. The Rye visitor was interested and asked me to pass on about how pleased she was with Paddington. The visitor was from Japan ..
Pam not only knits beautifully but sings in her church choir . And was a Winchelsea choir singer and an excellent actor in there shows they put on…
