Making little girls happy

2025 is the 20th anniversary of the charity The Princess Trust

The Little Princess Trust provides free real hair wigs to children and young people, up to 24 years, who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment or other medical conditions. It costs on average £700 to provide one wig to a child or young person and the charity is always looking for fundraisers or donations. It also funds childhood cancer research looking for kinder and more effective treatments.

Edie and her lovely long locks

Two local children have been helping lately by having their amazing tresses cut short.
Lorraine and Simon Parsons explain how their grand-daughter, Edie, got involved, “Edie is supporting The Little Princess Trust. She had enough hair cut to make two plaits. Her hair will be used to make wigs for children who have lost hair due to health conditions. She also raised an amazing amount of money thanks to generous donations. Thank you to Karyn at the Rye Retreat Aveda Lifestyle Salon and Spa, for supporting her through it.”

I asked Edie’s mum some questions about how this came about.

How did the idea of helping the poorly children with the cutting of Edie’s locks occur?
We have talked about it for years and she’s had lots of fun with her long hair and wanted another little girl to be able to enjoy it.

How does she feel with her shorter hair?
She loves her shorter hair and being able to swish it around and brush it and look after it herself.

What do the proud parents feel about this generous gift from their daughter to poorly children?
We are so proud of her dealing with a huge change and helping people. Seeing her face light up every time she got a new donation was so lovely. Knowing that she wants to help makes us both very proud.

Edie with two plaits to donate to The Little Princess Trust

Natalie Dodd tells of her family’s experience with the trust. “I saw a post on Facebook in 2018 about someone who had donated their hair to The Little Princess Trust so I decided to do the same thing. Then in 2022 I and my two daughters, Paige and Annabelle, decided to do it all together. They had been inspired by what I’d done previously and I explained that the hair was used to make wigs for poorly children who had lost their hair and they thought it was a lovely thing to do.

Annabelle has been growing her hair since then and decided it was time to donate again which makes me feel very proud and I hope that it helps to make a child feel a little happier.

We also hope that this article will inspire others to do the same: it’s a really easy process to send the hair away and it’s such a worthy cause.”

  1. I remember our daughters donating to Locks of Love when we lived in the States — it’s possible that their beautiful healthy hair is still enhancing people’s lives all these years later! Well done everyone involved in Rye’s contribution to the Little Princess Trust, and I hope this article attracts many more donations. Thanks Kt.
