Rye Community Primary School and Starfish Pre‑school opened their doors on Wednesday March 25 for another session of their free weekly community playgroup, which offers local families a welcoming space to play, connect and feel supported. Each week features a range of engaging activities for young children, and this session included a special Easter theme with seasonal crafts, sensory play and plenty of festive fun.

The playgroup, run by Starfish Pre‑school as part of the school’s commitment to early-years engagement, has quickly become a valued fixture for families with young children. Staff say its purpose is simple but powerful. “Our free weekly playgroup opens our doors to the community and gives local families a warm, welcoming space to connect.”

Children enjoyed a range of Easter crafts, sensory activities and play opportunities, while parents and carers took the chance to chat, meet new people and explore the setting. For many families, the benefits go beyond just a fun morning out.

Two Starfish staff shared how they feel about the pre-school. “We’re proud to offer a safe, friendly and creative environment where young children can play and parents can feel supported,” said one. Another added, “By hosting these sessions each week, we’re building lasting relationships with families long before their child starts school.”

Families share why they attend

During the session, several parents spoke about what the playgroup means to them.

For one parent, today was their very first visit. “There’s actually something to do with him! He’s nearly two, so he really needs that interaction. On cold days the park isn’t ideal, so having somewhere indoors in Rye is perfect.” They added that, with no car, reaching other groups was difficult. “There aren’t many options nearby, and soft play gets expensive. Having this free group every week is brilliant.”

Another parent highlighted the value of a school-run group. “Having a playgroup linked to a pre‑school makes total sense – you can feel the structure and support behind it.”

For families with children already attending Starfish Pre‑school, the group fits naturally into their routine. “Life is chaotic with little ones, so the 9am start is perfect for us. My son is here already, so dropping in for playgroup works really well.”

Some families even travel from Hastings to attend. “My partner heard about it while looking for nurseries. It’s become a nice part of the week — it breaks up the morning, and she enjoys having people to chat to.”

A reflection of the school’s values

The playgroup not only offers play and companionship, but embodies Rye Community Primary School’s ethos. Staff say that the playgroup “reflects everything Rye Community Primary stands for: inclusion, care, and a genuine commitment to families.”

From next term, the sessions will run every week, continuing to offer free, friendly, accessible opportunities for local children to explore, play and learn, rain or shine, with both indoor and outdoor spaces ready for use.
