Five hundred people are expected to take part in the Crib Service at St Mary’s in Rye on Christmas Eve, 24 December at 5pm. It will be one of the most attended services in the church this year.

“Families are being encouraged to take part,” said one of the organisers, David Angell. “It’s a long-established presentation of the Nativity with traditional carols, including local children acting out the story, culminating in a tableau around the crib. Everyone will get a small light as part of the story will be performed as if lit by stars.”

He said there’s also a rehearsal on 23 December at 2pm. “It’s a very short get-together to run through things, though if it’s not possible to make it, then please turn up an hour before the Crib Service itself.”

A collection will be taken with all donations on Christmas Eve going to Family Support Work and the Women’s Refuge Centre in the Rye area. Their work will also be explained at the service.
