This Christmas, the historic streets of Winchelsea glow a little brighter, not just with festive lights but with generosity of spirit. Winchelsea Windows is a much-loved tradition in which residents transform their windows into beautiful Christmas-themed displays, creating a magical trail through the town while raising funds for Demelza, the children’s hospice charity.

Behind the ancient walls and medieval streets, windows become tiny stages, softly-lit scenes of angels, stars, winter landscapes and festive stories, each one thoughtfully created by the people who live there. As dusk falls, the town invites visitors and locals alike to wander, pause, and admire – turning a simple evening walk into a shared seasonal experience.

What makes Winchelsea Windows so special is its quiet intimacy. There are no tickets or turnstiles, just open hearts and glowing windows, each one offering a moment of wonder and reflection. Donations gathered along the way help support Demelza’s vital work with children and families, giving the event a deeper meaning beyond its visual beauty.

In a season often filled with rush and noise, Winchelsea Windows offers something different: a reminder that community, creativity and compassion can shine just as brightly as any Christmas light. It is a small-town tradition with a big heart – and a gentle example of how kindness, like candlelight, is best when shared.

Debbie Cosstick, Mayoress of Winchelsea, summed up the event, “Once again, on Saturday 13 December, over thirty beautiful windows lit up for Christmas at various locations in Winchelsea. The windows are now lit every day between 4.30pm and 8.30pm until 31 December.”

“Trail maps which guide you to each of the locations can be purchased for £1.00 and are available from the Little Shop, The New Inn and Winchelsea Farm Kitchen. This is a wonderful festive event that will please both young and old. Walking the town and spotting the windows is a lovely thing to do, especially with friends and family. All funds raised are in aid of Demelza East Sussex Children’s Charity, so please give generously. Please bring a torch and take care when crossing roads.

“During 2025, a number of fundraising events have taken place in Winchelsea to support the charity. Last Saturday 13 December also saw a packed community gathering in the New Inn followed by a presentation to members of the Delmelza team of funds raised on behalf of the Winchelsea Community (with more to come!) together with a fantastic amount provided by The Belron Ronnie Lubner Charitable Foundation. My deepest thanks to everyone in Winchelsea and beyond, who have supported this charity in so many different ways, and I am so pleased that the Rye Retreat have also agreed to support Demelza this year. Wishing you all a very happy Christmas and New Year.”
