Rye Cricket Club 1sts travelled to Preston Nomads 2nds on Saturday, July 23 in search of a much needed victory after recent defeats. They arrived to discover in this Summer of drought a wet wicket, thanks to an overnight storm and covers not being in place. Rye won the toss and inserted Nomads.
Opening bowlers Carl Mumba and Craig Pierce found conditions to their liking.as they reduced Nomads to 42-5, Craig Pierce, 2-11 off 9 overs, and Carl Mumba, 2-43. Nomads recovered to 83-6, then father and son Kashif Ibrahim 63 not out and Adam Ibrahim 24 not out, were content to have a net as Nomads innings petered out to 165-6 off 45 overs.
Rye’s overseas player Carl Mumba opened like a whirlwind hitting 61 off 35 balls, including 7 sixes. His dismissal saw James Hamilton 53 not out steer Rye to victory by 8 wickets in 32 overs. Victory returned Rye to joint 2nd with 3 other clubs, and Nomads a point behind. Ifield lead the league by 10 points and they are the visitors to Rye Cricket Salts next Saturday in a match sponsored by My Sweet Old Etcetera.
Rye 2nds gained revenge on Saturday at home to Bells Yew Green 2nds with a 37 run victory. Rye 2nds posted 189-6 off 40 overs thanks to Spencer Fielding, 51, and Kyle Scott 50. They laid the foundation as 15 year old Joseph Kemsley hit 22 not out.
Bells Yew Green’s reply was thwarted by Kyle Scot, 2-28, and spinner Ross Pierce, 4-22. BYG slumped to 80-6, and although the tail wagged, Joseph Kemsley, 2-19, ensured they were dismissed for 152. Next Saturday the 2nds travel to Laughton as they seek to improve on their 5th place in the Division.
The Thirds had a tough day at East Dean & Friston 2nds. Their opponents, full of experienced cricketers racked up 254-6, as David Varney hit 105 not out and Mark Pankhurst 49. George Orpin, 2-43, and Alex Stone, 2-32, the pick of the Rye bowlers. The Thirds could only amass 68 in reply as the wicket deteriorated. This Saturday the visitors to Icklesham are Sidley 2nds.
