On Saturday July 27 Rye Bowls Club hosted its annual Open Mixed Triples Tournament sponsored by The Mermaid Inn.

This year, once again, 24 teams from across Sussex and Kent applied to take part in what has become a major event in their bowls calendar. As well as many of our regular participants we were happy, this year, to welcome new teams to this event.

Soon after 6am the bowls club members could be seen beavering away finalising the erection of the marquees and gazebos in preparation for the day ahead, and were rewarded with bacon butties for their efforts.

Unfortunately, after days of hot sunny weather, tournament day heralded a morning of heavy rain followed by an afternoon of showers. Undaunted, at 9.30am sharp, our visitors donned their wet weather gear and commenced the first of their three games.

Players and guests received a superb two course lunch, and homemade cakes and savouries were available throughout the day. There was also a tombola and various raffles, with prizes kindly donated by members and local businesses.

The afternoon concluded at 4:30pm with the presentation of the shield and individual trophies to the winners by Judith Blincow, Rye Bowls Club President and owner of The Mermaid Inn, sponsor of the tournament.

Congratulations go to the winners of this year’s event who were Barry Skates, Brian Jakes and skip Angela Jakes from Ditton Bowls Club with 27 points.

Runners up were Pam Marriott, Pat Wynne and skip Richard Wheeler from Peasmarsh Bowls Club with 26 points.

Third placed team were S. Tracey, C Fearn and skip B. Norman from Victoria Park Bowls Club with 25 points.
