Last Saturday, Rye made the short journey to play Hastings Priory Seconds at Horntye. The weather was more autumnal than summery…..and a big thank you to our scorer Janet Tiltman who had to score all afternoon without protection from the elements.

Skipper Harry Smeed won the toss and elected to bat first on an extremely dry wicket. Harry Smeed 60 and James Hamilton 24 got Rye off to a solid start with another 50 run opening partnership. As the ball softened, the slow paced wicket made scoring challenging. Rye wobbled on 94-4, but man of the match Tobias Farrow 62 and Spencer Fielding 25 took Rye to 166-6. The tail wagged as Rye suffered 3 self inflicted run outs, finishing on 212-9.

Hastings Priory in response lost an early wicket, but Alex Coyle 40 gave momentum. Once he was dismissed, only Bradley Smith 42 and Jamie Pooley 24 threatened. However the Priory batting was tied up by accurate medium and slow bowling as James Smeed bowled 8 overs 1-19 and Ben Clifton 8 overs 2-40.

Tobias Farrow returned to remove the tail with 3-45, to add to his batting exploits. Priory finished on 192-7.

Rye finish their August Cup fixtures this Saturday at home to Seaford, 12:30pm start at the Rye Cricket Salts.
