Winchelsea Singers presented their Summer Soiree on Sunday, June 25 – and what an entertaining evening it was! Organised by the indefatigable Charlotte Beecroft and produced by the very talented Iain Kerr it was an evening of great fun, talent and enthusiasm.

The blood-pressure-raising ‘habanera’

Acts included two songs by Janice Reeve which went down very well, the Gendarmes Duet and an arresting performance by David Jefferies and David Hance with that good old music-hall number The Biggest Aspidistra in the World, great fun, an evergreen if ever there was one. Habañera, ably sung by Mary Hewitt, was responsible for raising the blood pressure of several of the men in the audience and The Frustrated Feminists by Pam Peters and Lorna Challand was done with a light comic touch. Then we were treated to two songs by the lovely Ann Rachlin, which were very funny and deliciously wicked and had the audience in stitches. Carol Scoines gave a nicely controlled rendition of Granada and to take us up to supper we were treated to a sort of three-handed Two Ronnies sketch, very droll and so funny.

Then supper, which was prepared and supplied by Charlotte, was delicious. In the final part of the entertainments, Walter, another music-hall favourite, was performed very nicely by Linda Graham, Some Enchanted Evening by Andrew Hewitt, with audience participation, and then a beautifully executed presentation of The Decorators Gavotte from The Chandeliers by Goldberg and Romberg, performed by Iain Kerr and Robert Holland and a lovely way to finish a very enjoyable and polished evening’s entertainment.

Well done Charlotte and all the people who gave their time to make this happen.
