The new cafe bar at the top of Conduit Hill received its licence to sell alcohol just in time for the Easter trade. La Maison, part of Louis Swann’s chain which also includes second hand designer clothes and vintage furniture, is a classy wine bar where most of the fittings and furnishing are available to buy.

A participant on one of the Rye History Walks over the Easter weekend, remarked that with La Maison at the top of Conduit Hill and the ever popular Olde Worlde Wines at the bottom, it seemed likely that sightings of Rye’s infamous ghosts, monk Cantato and his forbidden lover Amanda, might increase as people staggered between the two.
