“Wuthering Heights” in Winchelsea

On Sunday, July 20, people all over the world are donning their red outfits and joining in a mass choreographed dance to Kate Bush’s iconic 1978 hit, ‘Wuthering Heights.’ As far apart as (among others) the UK, Australia, Denmark, the USA and Finland, people will be swirling, twirling and swaying in an attempt to recreate Bush’s famous video.

This year, Winchelsea is joining in.

Although there are no wild and windy moors (and not much wuthering) in the town, the event will be staged in the garden at the New Inn, Winchelsea. There will be a brief rehearsal in the car park at 11.30 and the dance will take off in the pub garden at noon.

The event first took place as part of the Brighton Fringe Festival in 2016 and soon spread worldwide. This will be the tenth time it’s been staged and it grows more popular every year.

Why? It seem there’s something about this eerie, memorable song and its ethereal singer that’s been capturing the public imagination for five decades – and what better way to celebrate that than create an epic visual in red!

You don’t need to be a dancer, or even particularly agile (no cartwheels!) and if you can’t follow the steps then it’s OK to just wave your arms about. It’s open to all, including dogs, and probably the most fun you can have in 3 minutes and 44 seconds. Wear something red and come and join us – you’ll leave feeling inspired.
