Rye News is looking to fill two key posts to help run Rye’s local newspaper – an editor and an editorial assistant.
It’s an exciting time to be joining Rye News. The paper has between six and seven thousand readers a week, with a further 6,000 following on social media. Our weekly email is sent to almost 3,000 people. Soon we’ll be moving to a new publishing platform too.
Rye News is published online each Friday. It is primarily funded by donations, along with some advertising and occasional grants to support the paper’s continuing development. Rye News is a Community Interest Company with a supportive board led by chair Peter Connock.
It plays a vital role in the community providing a source of trusted news and features about life in Rye and the surrounding villages. Everyone on the team is a volunteer, some spending an hour or two on stories, others working a lot more. For both posts you will be working very closely with an enthusiastic team of volunteers and contributors, including deputy editor Juliet Duff, chief reporter Kt Bruce and social media editor Natasha Robinson.
These are the two posts we are looking to fill:
Rye News – editor
– Leads the production of Rye News each week

– Deals with editorial issues, concerns and complaints
– Plans coverage of future events
– Responds to breaking news stories
– Gives feedback to contributors
– Chases stories, features and potential contributors
– Writes stories
– Represents Rye News in the community
Rye News – editorial assistant

– Supports contributors to submit stories and features
– Liaises with contributors/potential contributors to write stories
– Chases news stories as directed
– Writes stories and covers events
– Contributes ideas and stories
– Organises editorial and social meetings
– Helps with the maintenance of the website, inbox and archive
Both posts, like all roles at Rye News, are unpaid.
If you’re interested in either post, or would like to know more about joining the volunteers who put together Rye News each week, please contact the current editor James Stewart at jsryenews@gmail.com or chair Peter Connock at cpconnock@icloud.com.
