Two hundred and eighty Jempson’s staff have received a cash bonus this year as part of a profit share that’s handed out over £250,000 since it began in 2020.

The amount each worker receives is based on hours worked and a number of terms and conditions. It has been paid every year apart from one, since the scheme started.

The profit share incentive was introduced to recognise the contribution staff make to Jempson’s said Stephen Jempson, owner and manager. “This is another way we try and thank our colleagues for their extraordinary commitment, loyalty and support that they give to the business through the good and not so good times.”

“We would not have succeeded in this difficult market without their continued assistance, drive and dedication,” he added. “In a challenging retail market, what makes the difference for an independent family business is its people.”

The local supermarket firm operates eight stores in Sussex and Kent, and celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2025.

It is being featured, along with a number of local businesses, in a new tv series about health and well-being which goes out on BBC One at 2pm on Monday 23 March. In Just One Thing, Clive Myrie explores how adding fish that are rich in omega-3, such as mackerel, salmon and sardines, can help improve a Rye mum’s diet.
