Plans for 55 new homes off New Road in Rye cannot be approved until at least the end of October says National Highways. The agency, which controls the A259 as part of its Strategic Roads Network (SRN), has raised concerns about access arrangements to the site at the former Freda Gardham school.
Martello Developments put forward plans to build the new homes on what is now the Rye Creative Centre last month. As well as new housing, a new access road is planned to and from New Road.
In a submission received on 27 July, Hermes Luli, head of planning and development for National Highways South East, said more work is needed by the developers on how the new access road will link with the A259. “It is not possible currently to determine whether the application will have an unacceptable impact on safety, reliability and/or operational efficiency of the SRN,” he said.
In the detailed letter National Highways explained the traffic management plan provided by the developers needs further information on the number of vehicles expected to enter and leave the development. Work is also needed on the safety audit, construction plans and vehicle access maps.
Earlier in July, East Sussex County Council raised concerns about the developer’s plans for drainage at the site.
