Rye’s league season in the Dean Wilson Sussex County Cricket League got underway last Saturday 9 May with mixed outcomes.
Rye 1sts hosted Glynde 1sts and lost by 60 runs. Glynde batted first after Rye won the toss. Ollie Bailey with 50 top scored for Glynde with support from Thakier Davids 48 and Mathew Blunt 42 as Glynde posted 234 all out. Craig Pierce 4-45 and Feddie MacKenzie 3-34 the pick of the Rye bowlers as Rye were never able to squeeze the Glynde run rate.
The target proved too much as Rye fell 60 runs short on 174-8. Ben Clifton 38 top scored, aided by Skipper Harry Smeed 37 and Cameron Cummings 25. For Glynde six different bowlers took wickets and were far more able to provide pressure with the ball.
Rye 2nds had a similar fate away to Eastbourne 3rds. Eastbourne batted first and on quick scoring ground threatened to post a large target. Jon Purdey 80, Gavin Hornsby 65 and R.Hornby 30 saw Eastbourne 215-4, but then 17 year old Matt Best 3-33 and Martin Blincow 2-36, hauled in the innings and dismissed Eastbourne for 229.
Rye came flying out after tea posting 50 in just 6 overs, as Paul Hitchcott 37 and Ellis Hatter 24 promised a victory. However J Jones 4-36 and aided by some incredible catches Rye’s innings fell away. Despite some lower order hitting Rye were all out for 157 in the 28th over.
The Thirds won away at Westfield 2nds. Rye posted 241-9 off 40 overs. Colin O’Neill posted 83 not out and Jon Walczak posted 69. Jonathan Gardiner with 4-19 led the Westfield attack. In response Westfield fell 27 runs short. Colin O’Neill 4-34 and Neil Archer 2-26 led the attack.
This Saturday 16 May, the 1sts travel to Mayfield 1sts, the 2nds host Kerala Strikers 1sts in a match sponsored by The Mermaid Inn, and the Thirds host Crowhurst Park 4ths at Icklesham.
The junior season is now underway with three good performances by the young players. The Under 13s played Ashford last Thursday 7May and posted 113-8 in 20 overs. Luke Rogers 30 top scored. Ashford in reply eased past the target in 14 overs losing just one wicket.
On Monday 11 May, the Under 11A team hosted Folkestone A in a thrilling game that went to the last ball. Folkestone batted first and posted 110 net runs 270. Gilbert Tyson 3-9 and Ollie Fitch 3-6 stood out for Rye with the ball. On the last ball Rye just needed to avoid a dismissal. Fergus Cooke played out the ball safely. His batting partner assuming the game was over walked towards the pavilion… you can guess the rest and Rye finished net runs 266. Really exciting game.
A young B Under 11 team went to Tenterden playing against boys two years older and really acquitted themselves. They took as many wickets as Tenterden, but too many wides was their downfall. Match highlight was a great catch by Manu Drake playing his first ever hardball game, as were two others.
Next week, the Under 13s travel to Wye on Thursday 14 May, the U11a host Ashford at Rye and the U11 B host Wye at Icklesham, all on Monday, then on Tuesday the U16s travel to Tenterden.

One of the factors all of this activity is possible, is because of the support we receive from local businesses. To express our appreciation we will be highlighting one of these businesses each week.
This week it is an enormous thank you to Bournes Moves who are sponsoring the Rye Cricket Salts for the third year.
“Bournes is a family-run removals, storage and relocation company with long-standing roots in Rye and the surrounding area, built over more than 150 years. From our Rye base we support local families and businesses with home moves, international removals, traditional and self-storage as well as office and commercial moving services, combining professional expertise with a personal approach to make moving easy and enjoyable.
“As a local employer and long-established business, we’re proud to support Rye Cricket Club and the Cricket Salts – a much-loved community space that brings people together through sport, volunteering, and family-friendly events. We also recognise the considerable hard work that goes into maintaining the grounds and keeping the Salts such a welcoming place for the town. Supporting local clubs like Rye CC matters to us because they play such an important role in keeping the local community connected, active and thriving.”
The support is not just for the four months of the cricket season – it helps the club look after the Salts all year round.
Next week we will be featuring our adult shirt sponsor Skinners of Rye.
