Rye News is looking for a new editor to lead the volunteers who put together Rye’s local newspaper every week. There is also a vacancy for an editorial assistant to support the team who report on life in Rye and the surrounding villages to a weekly readership of between six and seven thousand people.

James Stewart, who has been Rye News editor for two and a half years, said, “It’s been an amazing privilege being editor. I’ve learnt so much about how Rye works (and doesn’t) and met some amazing people. Best of all I’ve loved working with the Rye News volunteers, especially deputy editor Juliet Duff and chief reporter Kt Bruce. Everyone on the team is passionate about reporting on life in Rye.”

Rye News is a real rarity,” he said. “There aren’t many towns in England with a local paper like it, especially given the collapse of local media and the rise of misinformation. It’s time now for someone else to lead the team but I’ll continue to write for the paper. I’ve a long list of stories that I haven’t had time to follow up and of course I’ll support whoever takes over. Rye really is an amazing town full of stories that need to be told.”

Rye News chair Peter Connock said, “Under James’ leadership, supported by an enthusiastic group of volunteers, Rye News has gone from strength to strength over the last two and a half years that he has been editing the paper. Our readership has increased by 20% and, equally importantly, engagement between our readers and the paper has increased through comments, opinion articles and events. The team is delighted that James will remain with the paper as we transition to a new editorial team. I hope you will join us in thanking him for both his dedication and all his achievements at Rye News.”
