Rye College hosted its annual Values Awards Evening on Thursday 18 June, a special event recognising the hard work, resilience and achievements of students across the school.
The awards highlight not only academic success but also the personal qualities that enable young people to thrive both in school and beyond. Students were recognised for supporting others and pushing themselves to achieve their very best.
The evening also celebrated the school’s Learning Champions, the students who have made significant progress in their learning journey this year.

Two particularly significant awards were also presented. The Hither Green Award, presented by headteacher Dom Downes, holds deep historical meaning for the Rye community. Established following the tragic rail accident at Hither Green in November 1967, which affected many local families, the award serves as a lasting tribute to those who lost their lives. It is given each year to a student who has overcome personal challenges with positivity, commitment and resilience. This year’s recipient was Lucie in Year 11, whose journey and determination exemplify the spirit of the award.
The Rye College Legacy Award was presented by Chair of Foundation Governors, Richard Moore, and recognises a Year 11 student who has shown exceptional commitment, dedication and contribution to school life throughout their time at Rye College. Congratulations to Lerryn, this year’s deserving winner.
The evening also reflected the strong sense of community that underpins the school, with Rye Mayor Chris Hoggart, alongside local councillors John Breeds and Andy Stuart, in attendance to show their support.
Dom Downes said, “The awards represent the very best of Rye College. They celebrate not just achievement, but character. We are incredibly proud of all of our young people and the way they support one another to succeed, and evenings like this remind us of the strength of our school community and the bright futures ahead of them.”
