Rye was well represented in a gathering of mayors, their town clerks and local community representatives from the 14 Cinque Ports assembled at Walmer Castle over the weekend of 10 to 12 July to celebrate the unique history and enduring friendships that bind together the Confederation of Cinque Ports. The gathering took place exactly one year after the memorable visit there of His Majesty the King, adding an extra sense of occasion to a weekend dedicated to celebrating centuries of shared heritage, civic pride and community endeavour.

Walmer Castle in the sunshine

On Friday evening a drinks party was hosted by the Lord Warden Sir George Zambellas and his wife Amanda on the bastion of Walmer Castle with sweeping views of the wonderful castle gardens and the sea beyond. It was a chance to renew old friendships and to forge new ones. Martin Bruce was commissioned to write a new song for the mayors and they were delighted with its focus on the unique bond that unites the Cinque Port towns. Rousing music for the evening was also provided by The Hythe Concert Town Band. The reception was a fitting start to the Lord Wardens, recognising both our shared heritage and the people who continue to keep our communities thriving today.

The Right Worshipful the Mayor of Rye, Councillor Chris Hoggart and his wife Kathy attended. “The Confederation of Cinque Ports is much more than a historical institution – it is a living partnership,” Chris Hoggart said. “Weekends like this remind us that although each town has its own identity, we are stronger when we celebrate our shared heritage and work together for the future. Rye is proud to play its part in the Confederation of Cinque Ports.”

On Saturday 11 July in the Constable Tower at Dover Castle, the Lord Warden installed his new cadets: Able Cadet Amber Edwards from Hastings and Lance Corporal Maddison Green from Margate. Holding the ceremony at Dover Castle is especially fitting. For centuries, the Constable of Dover Castle has also held the title of Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, linking the castle with the defence of England’s south coast and the unique history of the Cinque Ports Confederation.

The following day the sun shone on the gardens of Walmer Castle as the mayors gathered for a picnic. As part of this year’s event they were invited to bring with them people who have made a significant contribution to their town over the past year, including those who give their time and energy to their communities but may not always receive the recognition they deserve. Deputy Mayor Pat Hughes represented Rye and enjoyed the afternoon, especially the sea song Rye Harbour Girl from her own village.

Hosted by the Lord Warden and his wife, the event was superbly organised, with special thanks going to Ian Potter, Jessica Neame, Nina Pace, Jacob and Alex, whose careful planning ensured the day ran seamlessly.

Entertainment added to the warm atmosphere throughout the afternoon. Martin Bruce delighted representatives from each of the Cinque Ports by performing traditional sea shanties, while talented young singer Shania Penfold captivated guests with a varied selection of beautifully performed songs that were warmly appreciated by everyone present.

Hythe wins the best picnic table

One of the highlights of the day was the friendly competition for the best picnic table. Every town had clearly gone to great lengths to produce imaginatively presented displays, making the judge’s task an exceptionally difficult one. Congratulations went to Hythe, whose outstanding picnic was chosen as the overall winner.

Events such as this are far more than social occasions. They strengthen the close ties between the Cinque Ports, celebrating centuries of shared history while encouraging collaboration, friendship and mutual support between the towns. The unique bond that links the Confederation continues to flourish, thanks to occasions like these, where tradition and community come together in such a welcoming and enjoyable way.

Sir George thanked those present for their continuing dedication to their towns and to the Cinque Ports Confederation.
