The “humble” sausage is not so humble after all, coming with a very interesting pedigree. First, sausages have been around for a very long time – since Roman and Greek times – and the word sausage comes from the Latin words “salsus” (salted) and Old French “saussiche”.

Jamie’s Sausages

Jamie’s Butchers at The Ship at Winchelsea Beach is renowned for its amazing sausages and recently won two awards, gold and silver, for traditional pork sausages. Ten varieties of sausage are on sale there, pork and herb being the most popular.

Secondly, the longest sausage was created in Romania at the end of 2014. It was a shocking 38.99 miles long and earned an entry in the Guinness World Records.

Thirdly, sausages are often known as “bangers” and this nickname came about during the second world war because at a time of meat shortages they contained so much water that they exploded when they were cooked.

Jamie’s winning sausages

Britain boasts over four-hundred-and-seventy varieties of sausage and five million Britons will eat some of these on any given day but research has found that the most popular day by far is on a Saturday.
