Rye Rugby Club has announced a merger with St Leonards Cinque Ports RFC, aimed at strengthening the future of rugby in the local area.

The move comes as Cinque Ports faces ongoing player shortages, with both clubs agreeing that joining forces will provide greater stability and opportunities for players at all levels.

As part of the merger, key Cinque Ports members – Adam, Tom and Gavin- will join the Rye committee to help ensure the club’s identity and traditions are preserved. Rye’s second team will be rebranded as Rye-Ports (Rye Cinque Ports), while the existing Goons squad will transition into a veterans’ side.

Several prominent Cinque Ports figures, including Ashley, Henry and Luke Price, are also expected to take on roles supporting coaching and club organisation.

Cinque Ports RFC will complete its remaining fixtures this season, including its anniversary match in May, before formally winding up operations on 30 June 2026.

Rye Rugby Club chairman Stephen Cooper welcomed the merger. “This is a really positive step for rugby in our area. By bringing the two clubs together, we’re ensuring the game continues to thrive locally. We’re proud to welcome Cinque Ports players, past and present, into the Rye family and look forward to building something strong together.”

Both clubs say they are excited about the opportunities the merger will bring and are committed to creating a sustainable and competitive future for local rugby.
