Miriam, the Mermaid and James

What better venue than the Tudor Room at the Mermaid Inn, a beautiful and intimate setting for an audience to sit and enjoy novelist Miriam McGuirk in conversation with James Stewart of Rye News and Ryecast. Miriam, a local author was part of this year’s Rye Arts Festival and as well as talking us though her latest novel Second Chances, Miriam took us on a journey from her childhood in Dublin, to London, where she looked for the gold paved streets, then to Turkey, where she rediscovered herself, before finally arriving in Rye with husband Chris where she set up her writing shack in their back garden.

Miriam and James, two true professionals

Her life experiences had the audience spellbound, her journey so far a mixture of highs and lows but always interspersed with a little humour. Reaching for the stars and never giving up have driven Miriam along the way from convent upbringing to running a chain of high-end restaurants, adopting the Turkish culture (and language) tackling health and well-being issues and rebuilding her life making her stronger than ever.

In conversation, in the Mermaid

James felt his job had been easy: “Miriam has such a warm personality, it wasn’t really an interview, more a conversation, I could have chatted to her for hours”.

A great combination of a skilled professional interviewing a seasoned writer. You will soon be able to hear more from Miriam as she will be writing her monthly column for Rye News entitled ‘M’s Corner’. Her next feature is on Friday 13, unlucky? Not in Miriam’s case – don’t forget, she has the luck of the Irish!

Signing copies of her latest novel, Second chances.
