Film Club Summer Season

Rye Film Club look forward to another summer of diverse and interesting films to tempt you out of your armchairs on a Friday night. We’re very pleased to offer two fine foreign language films, both highly-acclaimed, one set in South America and the other in Japan. These are joined by two music-themed films, one, the third remake of a famous musical and the other a 1960s tale set in the segregated American Deep South.

Friday May 3 – THE HEIRESSES (2018 – 98 minutes)

Chela and Chiquita are both descended from wealthy families in Asuncion, Paraguay’s capital, and have been friends for 30 years. Recently their financial situation has worsened and they are forced to sell off family heirlooms. As their debts lead to Chiquita being imprisoned for fraud, Chela has to face reality and dig deep into her resources to meet new challenges for survival. Starring Ana Brun and Margarita Irun. (Spanish language with English sub-titles) (7pm start, doors 6.30)

Friday June 7 – A STAR IS BORN (2018 – 136 minutes)

This new version of the story stars Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper in high-rated performances in this Oscar-winning film. Jackson Maine, a seasoned musician (Cooper) falls for a struggling young singer (Gaga) and helps her find fame and fortune as age and alcoholism send his own career into a downward spiral. (7pm start, doors 6.30)

Friday July 5 – SHOPLIFTERS (2018 – 121 minutes)

A Japanese couple, stuck with part-time jobs, take up shoplifting to make ends meet along with other members of their family. Their care-free and matter-of-fact lifestyle is suddenly about to become more dramatic as they take in a beleaguered young girl and their habit and motivations come under the microscope. With extraordinary cinematography and music, this Oscar-nominated film raises important questions about moral values and the idea of family. Starring Lily Franky and Sakura Ando. (Japanese language with English sub-titles) (7pm start, doors 6.30)

Friday August 2 – THE GREEN BOOK (2018 – 138 minutes)

It’s 1962 and Tony (“Tony Lip”) Vallelonga, a nightclub bouncer is out of work when his club closes down. His best offer of work is as a driver for a black classical musician, Don Shirley for his tour of the Deep South. Although Tony is not to keen to work for a black man he needs the work and they set off using the Negro Motorist Green Book, a guide to safe motoring through segregated states. As they both witness the full appalling injustices they encounter on the road, they find a new respect for each other’s talents and a friendship and understanding which will change both their lives. Starring Mahershala Ali in an Oscar-winning performance of a true story alongside Viggo Mortensen who was Oscar nominated for his role as Tony. (7pm start, doors 6.30).
