This week’s featured film showing at Rye Community Centre Film on Friday October 2 – The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel  (2015 – 122 minutes)  This second helping of the Exotic Marigold Hotel saga is a joyful romp with a host of National Treasures of stage and screen on view. Joining hotel owner Sonny Kapoor (Dev Patel) in reprising their roles are Dames Judi Dench and Maggie Smith along with Bill Nighy, Ronald Pickup, Penelope Wilton and Celia Imrie. Fresh blood is added to the mix in the shape of Tamsin Greig and Richard Gere which all makes for a charming, colourful and entertaining film guaranteed to leave you with that feel good factor. (7pm start, 6:30pm doors).

Everest (2D) & (3D) [12A] 121 mins   Inspired by the incredible events surrounding an attempt to reach the summit of the world’s highest mountain, Everest documents the awe-inspiring journey of two different expeditions challenged beyond their limits by one of the fiercest snowstorms ever encountered by mankind. Their mettle tested by the harshest elements found on the planet, the climbers will face nearly impossible obstacles, as a lifelong obsession becomes a breathtaking struggle for survival. With stunning 3D effects and starring Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, Robin Wright, Sam Worthington, Keira Knightley, Emily Watson and Jake Gyllenhaal.

Bill [PG] 94 mins   The story of “what really happened” during Shakespeare’s “lost years” – how the hopeless lute player Bill Shakespeare left his family and home to follow his dream. Along the way he encounters murderous kings, spies, lost loves, and a plot to blow up Queen Elizabeth. From the award-winning cast of BBC TV’s Horrible Histories with and Sky One’s Yonderland – Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard and Ben Willbond – who together will play 40 roles in the film. Also starring Damian Lewis as Sir Richard Hawkins and Helen McCrory as Elizabeth I.

99 Homes [15] 112 mins   A tense, riveting thriller about the lengths one man will go to support his family. Set amidst the backdrop of the 2008 house market crash, Dennis can’t save his family home despite his best efforts. Thrown to the streets with alarming precision by real estate shark Mike Carver, Dennis, out of work and luck, is given a unique opportunity – to join Carver’s crew and put others through the harrowing ordeal done to him in order to earn back what’s his. Delicately training his eye on the rigorous details, the reliably astute director Ramin Bahrani imbues his characters with icy complexity to achieve his compassionate portrait of a man whose integrity has become ensnared within an all-too-relevant American crisis. Winner of the Golden Lion award at the Venice Film Festival, starring Andrew Garfield, Michael Shannon and Laura Dern.

Mia Madre [15] 107 mins / subtitled  Palme d’Or winning director Nanni Moretti (We Have a Pope) returns with Mia Madre, a playful, reflective and intelligent drama. Set in present-day Rome, the story follows Margherita, a filmmaker attempting to balance her work with her family life. Pulled between the demands of a difficult Hollywood actor (John Turturro, in a scene-stealing role), her teenage daughter and the slow decline of her mother’s health, she finds herself struggling to hold everything together. But much like the director’s profession itself, she must stay in control right until the final call… Winner of numerous international awards, including the Ecumenical Jury Prize at Cannes 2015, Mia Madre is a subtle, tender and carefully balanced exploration of love, loss and the pressures of modern life. Also starring Margherita Buy and Giulia Lazzarini.

A Walk in the Woods [15] 104 mins  In this new comedy adventure, celebrated travel writer, Bill Bryson challenges himself to hike the Appalachian Trail – 2,200 miles of America’s most unspoiled, spectacular and rugged countryside from Georgia to Maine. The peace and tranquility he hopes to find is anything but, once he agrees to be accompanied by the only person he can find willing to join him on the trek – his long lost and former friend Katz, a down-on-his-luck serial philanderer who, after a lifetime of relying on his charm and wits to keep one step ahead of the law – sees the trip as a way to get out of paying some debts and sneak into one last adventure before it’s too late. The trouble is, the two have a completely different definition of the word, “adventure”. Now they’re about to find out that when you push yourself to the edge, the real fun begins. Starring Robert Redford, Emma Thompson, Nick Nolte and Mary Steenburgen.

The Royal Opera House: le Nozze di Figaro  LIVE: Monday October 5 at 6:45pm  Often considered a perfect opera, Le Nozze di Figaro represents Mozart’s genius at its most lively and delightful. Based on a play that was originally banned for its political content, the fast-moving libretto creates realistic characters made even more human by Mozart’s outstanding music. Directed by David McVicar, conducted by Ivor Bolton with star bass Erwin Schrott, who has sung the role to great acclaim at Covent Garden before, partnered with star Romanian soprano Anita Hartig in the role of Susanna.  Running time approximately 205 minutes including one interval.

Rugby World Cup 2015  Catch all the action from the Rugby World Cup on the big screen in the Silver Room at Kino Rye!  Entry is free, but seating is subject to availability so make sure you arrive early! The Importance of Being Earnest  ENCORE: Sunday October 11 at 2:45pm  Oscar Wilde’s superb satire on Victorian manners is one of the funniest plays in the English language. Two bachelor friends, the adorable dandy Algernon Moncrieff and the utterly reliable John Worthing JP lead double lives to court the attentions of the exquisitely desirable Gwendolyn Fairfax and Cecily Cardew. The gallants must then grapple with the riotous consequences of their deceptions – and with the formidable Lady Bracknell.  Running time approximately 150 minutes including one interval.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail 40th Anniversary  Wednesday October 14 at 8pm  In cinemas for one day only – a brand new version with an exclusive filmed introduction from the Pythons plus the bonus of sing-a-long subtitles for the two infamous songs! Starring Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones and Michael Palin.

The Who at Hyde Park 119 mins [15]  Friday October 9 at 8:30pm  One of the greatest rock bands of all time, The Who celebrate 50 years of classic songs in London’s Hyde Park. Recorded in front of a sell-out crowd of 65,000 fans, Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend deliver a definitive set list of all the greatest hits as The Who take their audience on an “Amazing Journey” through their entire career from classic albums such as Who’s Next, Tommy, Quadrophenia, My Generation and Live At Leeds up to the present day, plus exclusive interviews with Roger Daltrey, Pete Townsend, Robert Plant, Iggy Pop and others.

Hamlet  LIVE: Thursday October 15 at 7pm and ENCORES on Sunday October 18 at 7pm and Thursday October 22 at 2.00pm  As a country arms itself for war, a family tears itself apart. Forced to avenge his father’s death but paralysed by the task, Hamlet rages against the impossibility of his predicament, threatening both his sanity and the security of the state. Benedict Cumberbatch takes on the title role of Shakespeare’s great tragedy in this eagerly awaited production. Directed by Lyndsey Turner and produced by Sonia Friedman Productions.

The Barber of Seville  LIVE: Monday October 19 at 7:30pm  The Barber of Seville will have you smiling from the moment it begins. Set in an elegant vision of 18th-century Seville, Jonathan Miller’s much-loved production is as side-splittingly funny as ever. A superb cast includes ENO favourite Andrew Shore (The Pirates of Penzance) in one of his signature roles as Dr Bartolo, former ENO Harewood Artist Kathryn Rudge as Rosina, and rising baritone Morgan Pearse as the barber Figaro.  Running time approximately 170 minutes including one interval.

Henry V  LIVE: Wednesday October 21 at 7pm  Henry IV is dead and Hal is King. With England in a state of unrest, he must leave his rebellious youth behind, striving to gain the respect of his nobility and people. RSC Artistic Director Gregory Doran continues his exploration of Shakespeare’s History Plays with Henry V performed in the 600th anniversary year of the Battle of Agincourt. Following his performance as Hal in Henry IV Parts I & II Alex Hassell returns as Henry V.  Running time approximately 210 minutes including one interval.
