Screenings at Kino Rye from Friday April 22 include:

The Jungle Book (2D) & (3D) [PG] 106 mins   Rudyard Kipling’s beloved story returns to the screen in Disney’s magical remake of this classic film, using a combination of live action and astounding computer-generated imagery. Urged to abandon the only home he’s ever known, Mowgli embarks on a captivating journey of self-discovery, guided by panther-turned-stern mentor Bagheera and the free-spirited bear Baloo. Along the way, Mowgli encounters jungle creatures who don’t exactly have his best interests at heart, including Kaa, a python whose seductive voice and gaze hypnotises the man-cub, and the smooth-talking King Louie, who tries to coerce Mowgli into giving up the secret to the elusive and deadly red flower: fire. Directed by Jon Favreau and starring Neel Sethi with the voices of Ben Kingsley, Bill Murray, Scarlett Johansson, Christopher Walken, Idris Elba and Lupita Nyong’o.

The Man who knew Infinity [12A] 109 mins. The true story of friendship that forever changed mathematics. In 1913, after growing up poor in Madras, India, Srinivasa Ramanujan Iyengar, a self-taught mathematics genius gained admittance to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he forged a bond with his mentor, the eccentric professor GH Hardy, and fought against prejudice to reveal his mathematic genius to the world. Starring Jeremy Irons, Dev Patel, Toby Jones, Jeremy Northam and Stephen Fry.

Eye in the Sky [15] 102 mins. Helen Mirren stars as Colonel Katherine Powell, a UK-based military officer in command of a top secret drone operation to capture terrorists in Kenya. Through remote surveillance and on-the-ground intel, Powell discovers the targets are planning a suicide bombing and the mission escalates from “capture” to “kill.” But a nine-year-old girl enters the kill zone triggering an international dispute over the moral, political, and personal implications of modern warfare. Directed by Gavin Hood the film also stars Aaron Paul, Barkhad Abdi, Jeremy Northam and Alan Rickman in his last film role.

Eddie the Eagle [12A ] 16 mins.  Inspired by true events, Eddie the Eagle is a delightful and funny British comedy-drama about Michael “Eddie” Edwards, an unlikely but courageous ski-jumper who never stopped believing in himself – even as an entire nation was counting him out. With the help of a rebellious and charismatic coach, Eddie takes on the Olympic establishment and wins the hearts of people around the world by taking part in the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. Starring Hugh Jackman, Taron Egerton, Christopher Walken, Mark Benton and Keith Allen.

KF Panda

Kung Fu Panda 3 (2D) & (3D) [PG] 95 mins   He’s back! Kung Fu Panda returns in DreamWorks Animation’s biggest comedy adventure yet. When Po’s long-lost panda father suddenly reappears, the duo travels to a secret panda paradise to meet scores of hilarious new panda characters. But when the supernatural villain Kai begins to sweep across China defeating all the kung fu masters, Po must do the impossible – learn to train a village full of his fun-loving, clumsy brethren to become the ultimate band of Kung Fu Pandas!

Lucia di Lammermoor  LIVE OPERA: Monday April 25 at 7:15pm  Lucia di Lammermoor tells the story of an ongoing feud between two families in 17th-century Scotland that has terrible consequences for two young lovers. It contains what is undoubtedly one of opera’s most poignant and gripping mad scenes, and is regarded as one of Donizetti’s finest works. The opera has not been seen at the Royal Opera House in more than a decade, so this new production by Katie Mitchell will be a particularly important and exciting event. Conducted by Daniel Oren and starring Diana Damrau and Charles Castronovo.

BFI presents: Richard III Thursday April 28 at 7:30pm  Marking 400 years since the death of Shakespeare, Richard III (1995) returns to cinemas across the UK on April 28 as a one-day event cinema release. The new 2K restoration of the classic adaptation starring Sir Ian McKellen with Annette Bening, Maggie Smith, Nigel Hawthorne, Jim Broadbent, Kristen Scott Thomas, Robert Downey Jr. and Dominic West is preceded by an exclusive documentary and followed by a post-film discussion with its screenwriter and star, Sir Ian McKellen, and its director, Richard Loncraine, broadcast live from BFI Southbank.

Measure for Measure  Monday May 9 at 7:45pm   After a history of quirky adaptations, this lesser known work is now restored to its classic glory. In this story of secret identities and manipulation, the audience are invited to unravel the layers of intrigue skillfully crafted by a superb cast and the directorial prowess of Dominic Dromgoole in his final production for the Globe Theatre. Starring Mariah Gale as Isabella, Dominic Rowan as Duke Vincentio and Kurt Egyiawan as Angelo. Booking at the Kino from 11am, Friday April 8.

A View from the Bridge  Sunday May 15 at 8m Winning a trio of Olivier Awards, don’t miss this second chance to see the stunning 2014 production of Arthur Miller’s tragic masterpiece, a dark and passionate tale confronting the American dream. In Brooklyn, longshoreman Eddie Carbone welcomes his Sicilian cousins to the land of freedom. But when one of them falls for his beautiful niece, they discover that freedom comes at a price. Starring Mark Strong, Nicola Walker and Phoebe Fox.

Frankenstein LIVE BALLET: Wednesday May 18 at 7:15pm Royal Ballet Artist in Residence Liam Scarlett has chosen Mary Shelley’s gothic classic Frankenstein as the basis for his first full-length narrative ballet for the Covent Garden Main Stage. A story of betrayal, curiosity, life, death and, above all, love starring Steven McRae, Federico Bonelli and Laura Morera, with the music of Lowell Liebermann.
