The featured movie showing at the Rye Community Centre Film Club on Friday May 6 is The Dressmaker (2015 – 118 minutes)  Set in 1950s small town Australia, the story follows Tilly Dunnage (Kate Winslet) on her return to her roots. As an elegant, sophisticated young woman armed with her sewing machine and her haute couture style, she sets about transforming the women of the town. Having been sent away as a child under traumatic circumstances, Tilly sets about settling some old scores. The film also stars Liam Hemsworth as her lover Teddy, and Hugo Weaving as the local cop, with some unusual habits! (7pm start, doors 6:30pm)

Bastille Day [15] 92 mins  Michael Mason is an American pickpocket living in Paris who finds himself hunted by the CIA when he steals a bag that contains more than just a wallet. Sean Briar, the field agent on the case, soon realises that Michael is just a pawn in a much bigger game and is his best asset to uncover a large-scale conspiracy. Going against commands, Briar recruits Michael to use his expert pickpocketing skills to help quickly track down the source of the corruption. As a 24-hour thrill ride ensues, the unlikely duo discover they are both targets and must rely upon each other in order to take down a common enemy. A thrilling action film directed by James Watkins (Eden Lake, The Woman In Black) starring Idris Elba, Richard Madden, Kelly Reilly and Charlotte Le Bon.

The Jungle Book (2D) & (3D) [PG] 106 mins  Rudyard Kipling’s beloved story returns to the screen in Disney’s magical remake of this classic film, using a combination of live action and astounding computer-generated imagery. Urged to abandon the only home he’s ever known, Mowgli embarks on a captivating journey of self-discovery, guided by panther-turned-stern mentor Bagheera and the free-spirited bear Baloo. Along the way, Mowgli encounters jungle creatures who don’t exactly have his best interests at heart, including Kaa, a python whose seductive voice and gaze hypnotises the man-cub, and the smooth-talking King Louie, who tries to coerce Mowgli into giving up the secret to the elusive and deadly red flower: fire. Directed by Jon Favreau and starring Neel Sethi with the voices of Ben Kingsley, Bill Murray, Scarlett Johansson, Christopher Walken, Idris Elba and Lupita Nyong’o.

Dheepan [15] 115 mins Subtitled  From director Jacques Audiard (A Prophet, Rust and Bone) and winner of the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2015, Dheepan is a gripping, human tale of survival. On the losing side of a civil war in Sri Lanka, a Tamil soldier poses as the husband and father of two other refugees in order to escape their ravaged homeland. Arriving in France, the makeshift “family” sets about establishing a new life, only to find themselves once again embroiled in violence on the mean streets of Paris. A heartrending saga of three strangers united by circumstance and struggle, Dheepan is both a tour-de-force thriller and a powerful depiction of the immigrant experience.

Louder than Bombs [15] 109 mins  An upcoming exhibition celebrating photographer Isabelle Reed three years after her untimely death brings her eldest son Jonah back to the family house, forcing him to spend more time with his father Gene and withdrawn younger brother Conrad than he has in years. With the three of them under the same roof, Gene tries desperately to connect with his two sons, but they struggle to reconcile their feelings about the woman they all remember so differently. Nominated for a Palme d’Or at the 2015 Cannes Festival, directed by Joachim Trierand starring Gabriel Byrne, Isabelle Huppert, Devin Druid and Jesse Eisenberg.

Jane Got a Gun [15] 98 mins  The story of Jane Hammond, a young mother living in a secluded ranch on the vast New Mexico prairie. When her family’s life is threatened by a conniving gang of outlaws led by the nefarious John Bishop, Jane is forced to seek help from her former fiancé, now a gunslinger. Sequestered at her ranch with a limited stockpile of weapons and supplies, they await the epic showdown with the Bishops, whilst a tense romantic triangle unfolds inside. Starring Nathalie Portman, Ewan McGregor and Joel Edgerton.

In this story of secret identities and manipulation, the audience are invited to unravel the layers of intrigue skillfully crafted by a superb cast and the directorial prowess of Dominic Dromgoole in his final production for the Globe Theatre. Starring Mariah Gale as Isabella, Dominic Rowan as Duke Vincentio and Kurt Egyiawan as Angelo. Booking at the Kino from 11am, Friday April 8.

A View from the Bridge  Sunday May 15 at 8pm Winning a trio of Olivier Awards, don’t miss this second chance to see the stunning 2014 production of Arthur Miller’s tragic masterpiece, a dark and passionate tale confronting the American dream. In Brooklyn, longshoreman Eddie Carbone welcomes his Sicilian cousins to the land of freedom. But when one of them falls for his beautiful niece, they discover that freedom comes at a price. Starring Mark Strong, Nicola Walker and Phoebe Fox.

Frankenstein LIVE BALLET: Wednesday May 18 at 7:15pm Royal Ballet Artist in Residence Liam Scarlett has chosen Mary Shelley’s gothic classic Frankenstein as the basis for his first full-length narrative ballet for the Covent Garden Main Stage. A story of betrayal, curiosity, life, death and, above all, love starring Steven McRae, Federico Bonelli and Laura Morera, with the music of Lowell Liebermann.
